John Newton song engraved: "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That sav'd a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see."
- 7-7/8" inner circumference
The first verse of this famous 18th century hymn is engraved on this bracelet. The author, John Newton, was originally the captain of a slave ship, but after a slow conversion to Christianity became a leading figure of the anti-slavery movement in Britain. Probably written in 1772, the words of Amazing Grace convey some of the profound changes of Newton’s life. 1772 was significant as the year the Somersett Case determined that slavery did not exist in English common law. It encouraged the nascent anti-slavery movements in both Britain and the American colonies.
