Roman Luxe Sterling Silver Earrings
The shape of these earrings is typical of a design found throughout the provinces of the Roman Empire, where they were a particularly popular design. Sterling silver shaped with pearls.
- 1/2" wide x 7/8" long
The originals of these earrings date to the 1st to 3rd century CE and are now in the Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design. The harmoniously designed crescent-shaped earrings are enhanced by cultured pearls. They are representative of a fashionable style of earring found throughout the provinces of the Roman Empire, from Britain, throughout the Mediterranean and as far east as Roman Egypt where they can be seen in many portraits of the period.
