Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, published in 1868, is one of the great classics of American literature. The novel is drawn from her own experience of childhood in Concord, Massachusetts, where her home, Orchard House is now an historic house museum. Her mother Abigail's inspirational phrase, 'hope and keep busy', is often repeated in Alcott's works, including Little Women. It has here been engraved on a pendant of folk art shape and decoration, like those worn at the time.
